June is National Safety Month: Raising Awareness About Preventable Accidents

On Behalf of | Jun 1, 2018 | Health & Safety

June is National Safety Month, brought to you by the National Safety Council (NSC). This month we’re teaming up with the NSC and thousands of other organizations across the nation to make sure No One Gets Hurt. This campaign is focused on highlighting common safety precautions that everyone can take to ensure that preventable accidents are avoided. Accidental deaths are now the third leading cause of death among Americans, and these tragic losses are completely preventable. The two biggest changes in the causes of these deaths are due to a number of factors, including distracted driving, drunk driving, speeding, and more. Others are caused by accidental opioid overdoses, both because of prescription opioid painkillers and illicit use. Among the causes that didn’t show big changes, but still are significant threats, falls posed significant risk to both children and the elderly. Accidental poisonings, drownings, and on-the-job accidents are also serious dangers.

What Can I Do to Protect My Family?

The list of safety tips we could provide would be nearly endless if we wrote them all down, especially when it comes to safety at home, on the road, and at work. Luckily, the National Safety Council offers a huge variety of resources to help you understand your risks and take steps to prevent accidents. Here are some of the top tools they offer to keep your family safe:

  • The Safety Check Up Quiz: This short questionnaire allows you to plug in the information for any member of your family and learn more about the biggest safety risks they face, according to the NSC’s statistical data. This can be helpful in understanding where the risks lie.
  • Free Online Safety Course: Register by June 30th for a free course in first-aid. You learn online, and take a hands-on test with a qualified NSC instructor to receive your course completion card.
  • Free Online Course for Avoiding Fatigued Driving: Improve your road safety by taking this free 20-minute online course to learn what you can do to avoid fatigued driving, understand the warning signs of drowsy driving, change your sleep habits, and more. This course is available between June 24 and June 30.
  • Emergency Preparedness Information: The NSC shares information the help you prepare for a number of disasters, including earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and tornados. Read up to learn what you can do to protect your family during the next natural disaster.
