Product Liability Lawsuits Are Piling Up Against the Hyper Tension Drug, Benicar

| Feb 4, 2015 | Drug Safety

What is the issue?

A number of serious side effects are being reported for current and former patients using the hypertension drug, Benicar. These side effects include: chronic diarrhea, celiac disease misdiagnosis and sprue-like enteropathy. As a result of these side effects, many Benicar lawsuits are being pursued for the current or former users. Whats worse is that many people may not even realize that the drug is to blame for these side effects.

What is the history?

In 2002, Benicar, was released to the US market for patients battling high blood pressure. Daiichi Sankyo, Inc. and Forest Laboratories , the manufacturers of Benicar, claim their drug was superior to all other drugs in its class however no other drug in its class have been reported to cause serious side effects. Upon taking the drug, many patients experienced severe, chronic diarrhea along with substantial weight loss that requires hospitalization. This side effect could have gone undiagnosed in patients for many years and could have been misdiagnosed as celiac disease (an allergy to gluten that is found in grains).

What is being done?

From 2002 – 2008, approximately $1 billion has been spent in advertising Benicar. It is the third highest selling blood pressure medicine on the market. But it is clear that Daiichi and Forest did not perform their own due dilligence and warn the public of the risks in taking their medication In 2013, the FDA released a drug safety warning stating that Benicar may cause sprue-like enteropathy, resulting in side effects such as chronic diarrhea, weight loss and other gastrointestinal problems. A report published by the May clinic highlighted a number of symptoms after taking Benicar. The report results were as follows:

  • 100% experienced chronic diarrhea lasting 3 – 53 months
  • 100% experienced weight loss between 5 and 110 pounds
  • 68% exerienced nasuea and vomiting
  • 50% experienced abdominal pain
  • 41% exerienced bloating
  • 68% experienced fatigue

Lawsuits are being brough forth throughout the United States against Benicar manufacturers, Daiichie Sankyo and Forrest Laboratories.
