California Farm Linked to Romaine Outbreak Recalls Other Produce

On December 13, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) traced back the ongoing E. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce to Adam Bros. Farming Inc. in Santa Maria, CA. In response, the California farm recalled green leaf lettuce, red leaf lettuce, and cauliflower that was harvested between November 27 and November 30, 2018 to ensure none of their other produce were contaminated by E. coli. FDA investigators found that the reservoir sediment near the location of the produce was grown tested positive for E. coli O157: H7. The farm’s product may have come into contact with the water from the reservoir, causing it to test positive since the water itself had negative test results. So far, none of the produce recalled by Adam Bros. have tested positive for E. coli. The California farm has been cooperating with the FDA and notified all the customers impacted by the recall to warn them to avoid eating, selling, or transferring the produce. The recall only involve produce harvested in specific fields, not every single one. Illnesses from the outbreak began between October 5 and November 16, 2018. Fifty-nine people have been infected from 15 states and Washington D.C. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned consumers not to eat from central and northern California. Some romaine lettuce products have labels which include the region where the produce was harvested. You should check all bags or boxes for labels and avoid eating romaine lettuce from Santa Barbara, Monterey, and San Benito. If the romaine lettuce is not labeled, do not purchase or eat it.
