Tips for driving through a work area safely

In the state of Ohio, you may be fined for speeding in a construction zone. This isn’t always a strong enough deterrent to keep drivers from slowing down when entering a work area, but there are several compelling reasons why you should drive in a cautious manner whenever you see road crews performing tasks on a road or highway.

You can’t predict how others will behave

Slowing down in a work area can make it easier to take evasive action if a construction worker crosses your path or a piece of equipment malfunctions. It will also make it easier to avoid other motorists who may not have noticed an alteration in the traffic pattern until it was too late to make a safe lane change.

You may have less space to maneuver

In some cases, a single lane will be converted into two lanes to help guide traffic through the construction area. However, this means that you’ll be extremely close to the shoulder, a temporary median or another vehicle at all times. Therefore, even the slightest mistake could result in a serious auto accident taking place. Driving at a reduced speed can make it easier to retain control of your car while traveling through a narrow section of road.

An auto accident in a construction zone could cause significant property damage and bodily injury. If you were involved in a crash caused by a negligent driver, it may be in your best interest to hire an attorney to help with your case. He or she might review photos, videos or other evidence from the accident scene to help you obtain a favorable settlement or jury award.
