Why do work zone car accidents happen?

On Behalf of | Sep 20, 2021 | Car Accidents

Traffic declined overall in 2020, but accident figures reflected the opposite of what many expected. In particular, construction zones saw increased incidents of auto accidents. Traffic accidents could lead to pile-up collisions on Ohio roads, causing serious injuries due to the heavy machinery and congested conditions near worksites. Sometimes, accidents happen because a driver’s behavior places commuters and pedestrians at risk.

Common dangers associated with construction zone traffic

The Federal Highway Administration pointed to significant decreases in traffic in 2020. The organization also noted that fatal accidents in work zones increased in certain regions. That information may concern drivers who cannot avoid construction zones or come across unexpected work taking place on their regular route. Not surprisingly, negligence often factors into the accidents taking place in work zones.

  • Distracted driving: Distractions continue to be a top cause of car collisions. This is especially so in narrow, curvy and unpredictable construction zones. In attentive drivers endanger cars in front and behind them when their attention isn’t focused on driving safely.
  • Dangerous driving: A driver might not be distracted but chooses to ignore hand-held stop signs, directional and warning signs. s or attempts to drive around potholes haphazardly. Aggressive drivers who become impatient make dangerous decisions that can lead to fatal car crashes.
  • Speeding drivers: Speeding ranks among the top causes for construction zone accidents. When someone travels above the speed limit, noticing a hazard may be impossible until too late. Barriers, potholes and even changes in the pavement type and lead drivers to lose control of their vehicles.

Speeding or committing another moving violation may be enough to prove that a driver is at fault for a collision. Drivers who cause accidents may be on the hook for injuries they cause. Unfortunately, legal actions may be necessary to hold them responsible. Even high auto insurance liability limits might not cover the losses suffered by car accident victims.
