3 signs you have a shoulder injury after a car crash

Car accidents can result in an array of injuries, and shoulder injuries are among the most commonly overlooked. The intense force generated during a collision can cause considerable trauma to the shoulder joint and adjacent tissues.

Understanding the warning signs of shoulder injuries is crucial for seeking prompt medical intervention and mitigating further complications. Many people dismiss initial discomfort as normal post-accident soreness, but recognizing these key indicators can help you seek appropriate treatment before the condition worsens.

1. Persistent pain and stiffness

The most obvious sign of a shoulder injury is persistent pain that doesn’t go away, no matter how much you rest. This pain may manifest as a sharp, stabbing sensation during movement or a constant, dull ache even at rest. Unlike typical muscle soreness that gradually decreases over a few days, injury-related pain often remains consistent or worsens over time.

2. Visible swelling and changes in appearance

Swelling around the shoulder area is a clear indicator that your body is responding to injury. This inflammation may develop in the immediate aftermath of the accident or gradually as the days go by. The swelling might be localized to a specific area or encompass the entire shoulder region. Additionally, watch for any visible changes in your shoulder’s appearance, including a shoulder that:

  • Appears deformed
  • Sits lower than the other
  • Has an obvious bump or indentation

These visual changes often indicate more serious underlying damage that requires immediate medical evaluation.

3. Weakness and functional limitations

A significant decrease in shoulder strength or the inability to perform normal daily activities is a strong indicator of injury. This functional limitation often extends beyond just strength issues. You might also experience numbness or tingling in your shoulder, arm or fingers.

If you experience any combination of the abovementioned symptoms, seek medical attention promptly. You should also consider seeking legal intervention to access the financial resources you need during recovery.
