Ohio is home to many busy roads and highways. With new buildings and infrastructure construction, drivers frequently navigate through construction zones. Unfortunately, these construction zones can be hazardous for drivers and their passengers, especially those who don’t take the necessary precautions. Lucas County, where Toledo is situated, is one of five counties with the highest number of work zone car accidents in Ohio.

Construction zone accident statistics

According to the Ohio State Patrol, there were over 2,000 work zone accidents in 2022, with over 200 under the classification of severe accidents. Reckless drivers were the cause of many of these accidents, with them failing to follow the road rules.

Drivers who speed or drive recklessly in construction zones are often too focused on their destination and ignore warning signs, construction machinery, and workers on the side of the road. In addition, they may be looking at their cell phones and believing that the road rules are only for others. This type of behavior puts everyone at risk of motor vehicle accidents in construction zones, including the reckless drivers, their passengers, and occupants of other vehicles.

Dangerous behaviors

Despite the risks associated with construction zones, many drivers continue to engage in dangerous behavior. According to a survey by the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse, over 70% of drivers reported engaging in at least one dangerous behavior in a construction zone, such as texting while driving, speeding or tailgating. This puts all road users in the construction zone in harm’s way, including the drivers and their passengers, who are most in danger of being involved in an accident.

Driver awareness

It is crucial for a driver to be aware of the dangers posed by construction zones and to take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Drivers can reduce the risk of being involved in a construction zone accident by paying attention to warning signs, slowing down and always staying alert. They should also avoid distractions such as texting or using their cellphones while driving and should always follow the road rules, including posted speed limits and lane changes.

Drive safely in construction zones

Construction zones in Ohio can be incredibly dangerous. Reckless and inattentive drivers pose a significant risk to themselves and others in the construction zone. By paying attention to warning signs, slowing down and avoiding distractions, drivers can help ensure their safety and the safety of others in the construction zone.
